Can Couples Counseling Save Your Relationship?

Does couples therapy work? Will it work for my partner and me? Is it even worth the hassle?

Couples counseling can be a scary thing - when your relationship is on the line, there’s a lot at stake. Is it even worth it to try? If you’ve been asking yourself these questions, you’re in the right place - read on.

Here’s the thing no one wants to hear: it depends.

While I can’t promise that couples counseling will solve all of your problems, I can tell you that therapy has been shown to give couples the tools to help improve communication, create deeper intimacy, and establish a safe space where each partner feels heard, understood, and special.

What couples therapy is not:

Your couples therapist won’t tell you whether or not you should stay together (unless you’re seeking discernment counseling. More about that here). They also won’t pick sides or point fingers. The goal of couples therapy is not to win an argument; it’s to win a lasting, meaningful partnership.

So, is it worth it?

The thing I always tell potential clients to consider is this: what is your relationship worth to you? Don’t get me wrong, therapy can be hard; especially when it involves multiple people and years of hurt and communication barriers, but is it worth it to try everything you can to find your way back to healthy and happy? If you answered “yes,” couples therapy is a great choice for you and your partner.
